Fitness, Kenyan Mama Style!

“Perhaps fitness is not a good career for a woman of reproductive age....” Said my Husband. I know he said it from a good place, he is my rock, he has been supportive of me since I decided to take fitness up full time. Leaving the sitting room to me in the evenings after our baby has fallen asleep so that I can choreograph my classes in peace, indulging my trips for events, enduring changes in diet, but you see, we did not foresee this happening so soon after I had begun. There were two lines on the stick. We were expecting another mini me.

I am a mother of one. My new career was born out of losing weight and coming back to self after baby number one. I had done it through hard work, through a lot of research and studying, I had even taken up a course on personal training and sought certification in Zumba. It wasn’t about losing weight anymore, I wanted to spread this new happy place I had discovered, that we all have the power to transform ourselves, inside and out.

We moved to Nairobi from Nakuru in August. This was a new and exciting chapter for me. Once the house had come together, I set about knocking doors, marketing myself, teaching free classes....everything was beginning to come together. I was getting a schedule, enjoying my work, choreographing new classes all the time and loving it.

But then my shoes started getting a little smaller....really! Tight and tighter. I didn’t know this could happen? (in retrospect my body reacted rather fast)....I seemed to be bloated all the time, and that ab definition? What Ab definition?

The clincher? I went to a pool party and donned a small top to teach Zumba. We had fun. We shimmied, we danced, we had a terrific time. And we went home, tired, partied out. ....then the photos and the videos came out. My abs looked completely wrecked. I am a bit narcissistic you see, :-P I know how things are supposed to look with the hard work I put in, and they didn’t reflect it. It was time to pee on a stick.

...that last line was for the dramatic effect...I walked into a hospital and took a pregnancy test...less dramatic....but I wanted to be sure.

We are expecting another Mini Me.

Yay! Yay. Yay?

How does this affect my work, my career, my own body image? It is important to be confident as a trainer, inspiring and motivating others is only done when you are in a good place yourself.

So we talked, we mulled it over, my husband and I...and finally we decided....

This little baby is going to be a Maasai warrior at birth.

Eh?

Yes I said it! Mum’s going to be what she preaches everyday. That pregnancy is not a disease. That we can be active through out, that actually getting your legs off of the coffee table and getting them moving is beneficial to you, and your little one. My little baby is going to be born a Spartan, a Warrior, He/She is going to be born swinging a kettlebell ....ouch that might be painful...maybe just holding up a fist.

So I started showing a little early...happens with subsequent pregnancies. I’m about 7 and a half weeks in. The doctor seemed amused when I told him my abs told me I was pregnant....he doesn’t understand ego....but he was sweet.

So here I am....putting myself out there once again....putting my own tagline to the test. Fitness, Kenyan Mama Style!

This is today, after an hour and a half of kick boxing and kettle bell training.

Hello, I’m Miss Fit Kenya....and I’m expecting.

I've been up to a little bit of this and that

Moving to Nairobi has been awesome! The people here and about are so welcoming plus we get to sweat it out together. Here are some photos from Meru over the weekend where we went to have a fitness party with fellow Zumba instructor Grace. We were guests of Nick (very welcoming people)...We had lots of fun

Here I am...teaching sentao...you do a push up on a chair like this.....Yes you can do a push up to the beat of music

And they were such sweethearts, everyone did the push ups....

Here we are working abs with one of my favourite songs to teach.....Papaoutai

I have no idea what song this was but we were having fun!

Nick, Grace and myself....don't let her small stature fool you, that little girl jumps around like a bouncing ball when she's teaching
When are you going to come for one of my fitness parties?

Have a terrific week!

It was a fun day!

Yesterday was Operation Lose that Pot Belly Health and Fitness day in Nairobi! Here are the highlights!

There were nutrition talks, and exhibitors outside, I have loads of photos, here are a few of the workout sessions. Thank you everyone! The day was fabulous!

Zumba....I have never seen a class like this one

Probably because of the instructor, Jossy Simonet....my goodness she rocks!

Guess who.....warming up the class for strength

And you cannot have strength without push ups..yes ladies, hate me for it, I will always have you do push ups in my class

My very fit friend and a personal trainer Wangare leading the bums and tums class....by the way she is training for a triathlon this year....I'm gonna paparazzi that too!

One of Wangare's victims...that class would have made me ache too if I wasn't pretending to take photos

And then we cut the cake. On the Left, Janet who just had a baby but was there full force, on the right, Shiku, organised the event. Don't be fooled by her stature, she's a pocket hercules!
And I cannot forget our Mistress of ceremony? Mueni did a great job! She has the mic on this one.

Let's do this again sometime!

The success story that slim pills sellers tried to hijack

I have made many friends in this fitness journey and this is one of them...Nthenya. Recently, her before and after pictures which she posted in a fitness group were hijacked by weightloss supplement sales people (Magilim) and used to market their products on facebook. Shame on them. Here is her story.

BEFORE - 99 Kilograms. November 2012

"Everything I carried here went through my mouth. My weight was a culmination of bad eating and no exercise. I picked up bad eating habits when I went to boarding school. During the school holidays, I would go home and eat too much. My reasoning? I was "storing" food for when it wouldn't be available when I went back to school because the food at school was not tasty, it wasn't enough and often was not balanced.

Then I went to university. Fries became my staple food. For the four years I was in campus I can count the days I did NOT eat fries. I would never miss terrific tuesdays (buy one pizza get one free) and wacky wednesdays (One burger get another free).

Finally in October 2012 I made a decision that would change my life tremendously. That of losing weight and becoming healthy. I needed a push towards this though. I had some pain in my hip bone and went to see the doctor who told me I was too heavy for my age.

So I started going to the gym and watching what I eat. The journey has not been easy. I have an on and off love affair with tasty, calorie-full, really shouldn't eat it foods but on a balance of scales, I eat more healthy than I don't, which is what matters.

I had a gym instructor who is Bob Harper's evil twin. His taunts made me work harder. In December 2012 I started running. I could only do short distances at first. In April of this year (2013) I started running in earnest and my distance and timings improved.

I am participating in my first half marathon (21kms) on the 14th of this month (September). My progress keeps me going, the way I feel keeps me going. I am happy, and I feel strong and content to face each new challenge.

This is me at 74 kgs. A work in progress.

This is the reason photos can be a motivator

I was actually reminded by a friend (thanks Vicky) that I did have an ab photo for before insanity, so here it is, taken on the 20th of February this year. I was really proud of myself then having got rid of my CS Apron (All Caesarian Section Mommies can relate to this).

Come to photo no. 2. Post Insanity taken a few days ago. In all fairness I should have taken the photo on the day I finished insanity but I forgot. I haven't been eating clean, however, there is a big difference. Oh wow, I am so glad I put myself through that. Right now, I'm concentrating on a lot more weight training and falling in love with my kettle bells once more. I still do a few HIIT style workouts including some from the Insanity Series especially because my diet isn't that clean and I do need to keep burning what excess calories I consume.

Lesson of the day...Slow and steady wins the day!

Have an active month! Happy July people! This month, I turn a year older!

"During" photo.....couldn't find a before

My baby was 3 1/2 months here, I had been working out for 1 1/2 months. The pants I am wearing are maternity pants that I couldn't wear when I started working out. I had stopped wearing them at 5 months.

You are not a trash can

Do you get served that last bit of food from the sauce pan? Are you already full and refuse to leave any food on the plate because of wastage? Think of what you are doing to your body. Serve only what you need. You are not a trashcan.

Thursday, 4 April 2013

No one can do it for you. This is something you cannot ask help for, you have to do it yourself, there are no short cuts.

Someone posted this on a fitness group I belong to and it struck a cord with me. I found it so difficult to begin exercising post baby because I never had anyone to watch my baby. I think I kind of have a rhythm now though running is always a problem (for those who know Kenyan roads will understand even though I had a jogging stroller, I wouldn't dare risk my baby with that kind of driving going on.) Anywho....no excuses!

Post Workout photos

This is me post workout today. I guess I needed to put a face and body to all my musings on here. I am working on getting more muscle tone and definition now which as I discovered is hard work. I am at a point where I think what is failing me is my diet as `i do not follow a strict diet and take no supplements. I need to review this.
